Prepare
Earthquakes strike without warning. A little preparation now dramatically improves how you and your household weather the shaking and the hours that follow.
Drop. Cover. Hold On.
The single most important action during shaking: drop to your hands and knees, take cover under sturdy furniture, and hold on until the shaking stops.
Quick action guide
What to do before, during, and after
Before
- Secure heavy furniture, water heaters, and tall shelves to wall studs.
- Identify safe spots in each room, such as under sturdy tables or against interior walls.
- Assemble an emergency kit with 3 days of water, food, and medications.
- Agree on an out-of-area contact and a family meeting point.
During
- Drop, Cover, and Hold On. Get under a sturdy desk or table.
- Stay away from windows, mirrors, and anything that can fall.
- If in bed, stay there and protect your head with a pillow.
- If outdoors, move to an open area away from buildings and power lines.
After
- Expect aftershocks. Drop, Cover, and Hold On each time you feel one.
- Check yourself and others for injuries before moving about.
- Inspect for gas leaks, damaged wiring, and structural cracks.
- Use text messages because phone lines are often overwhelmed after a quake.
